Whether you exercise in a gym or at home, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the difference between standard and Olympic-sized weights. Beginners often make the mistake of assuming all weights are the same size, only to realize later that they purchased the wrong type for their barbell, bench and/or machine.
Standard and Olympic are essentially two different sizes used in barbells, weights, benches and machines. Standard plate weights have a hole diameter of 1”, which can is the appropriate size for standard barbells. Olympic plate weights, on the other hand, are just shy of 2” and are designed for use with Olympic barbells and machines.
While there are always exceptions to this rule, standard weights and barbells are typically used in home gyms, whereas Olympic weights and barbells are used in high-end gym equipment. Does this mean you can only use Olympic barbells at the gym? Absolutely not, but this is usually where you’ll find them.
You’ll also note that standard barbells tend to be shorter and weigh less than their counterpart. A typical standard barbell measures to just 5’, while an Olympic barbell will measure either 6 or 7 feet. The shorter size makes them the preferred choice for home gyms.
Yet another nuance between standard and Olympic sized barbells is the weight of the bar. Olympic barbells may exceed 40 or more pounds. Placing a couple 25-pound plate weights on the end is a great starting point for someone who’s never lifted before. Standard barbells are much lighter, typically weighing just 15-25 pounds.
The differences don’t end there. Being that Olympic barbells are heavier and thicker, they are also able to support more weight. If you are serious about lifting, you’ll almost certainly need an Olympic bar. With a greater maximum weight capacity, you can lift more without fear of injuring yourself.
There are still times when a standard barbell will prove useful, however, such as performing bicep curls. A massive 7-foot Olympic-sized barbell is awkward to use for bicep curls. Again, it can technically be done, but a shorter 5-foot standard barbell is easier, more comfortable, and will allow you to lift more weights.
Rather than limiting yourself to either a standard or Olympic barbell, you should invest in both models. Olympic barbells are great for doing chest presses, whereas standard barbells are often preferred for doing bicep curls and squats.
