Most runners reach a point where they no bottom out — no longer gaining speed or endurance. Also known as a plateau, this is a very real condition that can make achieving your fitness goals even more difficult. No matter how hard you try, you simply can’t overcome the plateau. Sound familiar? If so, try some of the tips listed below to improve your running endurance.
Stay Hydrated
The thought of chugging water before and during a run may sound a little counterproductive. After all, wouldn’t this slow you down? The truth is that most people go throughout the day in a constant state of mild dehydration. Normally, this doesn’t lead to any serious adverse effects. However, joggers, runners and other physically active individuals may suffer from muscle cramps, headaches and weakness when dehydrated.
A good rule of thumb is drink at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day. This will ensure you are hydrated and prevent any adverse effects like muscle cramps and weakness, which may otherwise slow you down.
Use a Timer
If you aren’t using a timer when you run, you are essentially guessing as to whether or not your time is improving. Most smartphones, and even the archaic larger cellphones, have built-in timers that are perfect to use when running. Hit the timer each time you run and make a note of the results when you finish.
Using this information, you can see first-hand whether or not you are improving. And if you aren’t improving, you can work on increasing your speed.
Take a Friend
Sometimes all it takes to improve your running endurance is to pair up with a buddy. Having someone next to you will give you greater motivation to push yourself. Don’t be afraid to call up a friend or family member to see if they are willing to run with you. Even if they say no, you can usually find a running partner by participating in local runs around your town.
Change Your Route
Another incredibly easy way to improve your running endurance is to change your route. By changing your route, you’ll expose your body to new terrain and sights, which in turn can strengthen muscles that were previously left unchecked. If you’ve been wanting to explore a new road or neighborhood, now is the perfect time to do so. Lace up a pair of sneakers and hit the road!
