Dumbbells vs Kettlebells: The Great Debate

Dumbbells and kettlebells are two of the most popular and widely used types of free weights. When used correctly, they encourage greater muscle growth while speeding up the heart rate; thus, toning and conditioning the individual’s physique. While both dumbbells and kettlebells can be used to achieve a full-body workout, there are noticeable differences between the two.

Muscle Mass

If you’re goal is strictly to build muscle mass, then you should stick with dumbbells. Workouts revolving around dumbbell exercises encourage greater muscle growth than kettlebells due to their ability to create small tears in muscle fiber. This doesn’t necessarily mean that kettlebells are useless when it comes to building muscle, but they don’t offer the same benefit as dumbbells.

The reason why dumbbells are a better choice for building muscle mass is because they focus on fewer reps using heavier weights. By pushing your body to its physical limits, you’ll encourage greater muscle growth.

Speed and Endurable

The area where kettlebell exercises shine above their counterpart is speed and endurance. Kettlebell exercises are usually performed faster and with a higher number of reps than dumbbell exercises. Of course, this translates into more endurance and speed.

I guess you could say kettlebell exercises are a hybrid form of cardio/weight lifting. You’ll still get some of the muscle-building benefits of lifting weights, but you’ll also build up your endurable through the cardio aspect of this activity.

Technique

The difference in technique between dumbbell and kettlebell exercises is like night and day. Dumbbell exercises are typically performed by slow, steady lifts, such as bicep curls, standing military shoulder presses, etc. On the other hand, kettlebell exercises are performed with more fluid, swing-like motions.

Because kettlebell exercises are typically performed with swinging motions, they have less of an impact on the joints. Individuals struggling with daily joint pain or degenerative arthritis may prefer kettlebells over dumbbells for this reason.

Should I Choose Dumbbells or Kettlebells?

Rather than focusing your energy on a single type of free weight, you should incorporate both of them into your physical fitness regimen. Dumbbells and kettlebells have their own strengths and omitting either of them will place you at a disadvantage.

The key thing to remember is that dumbbells are designed more for muscle growth while kettlebells offer a hybrid workout for muscle growth and cardio.
