The Importance of Stretching Before a Workout

Whether you are going for a jog around the neighborhood or hitting weights at the gym, you need to spend 10-15 minutes doing some basic warmups and stretches; otherwise, you place yourself at risk for developing injuries. To learn more about the importance of stretching and warming up before a workout, keep reading.

Muscle Flexibility

Stretching naturally encourages your muscles to become more flexible. When you stretch your body up, down and from side-to-side, the muscle fibers in your body gain a bit more flexibility. Rather than tearing down during your workouts, the muscle fibers will have a little more “give” in them. Muscle flexibility is critical during strength training and certain physically intense sports.

Prevent Injury

The single most notable advantage of stretching and warming up before a workout is its ability to reduce your chance of suffering from an injury. Pulled muscles and strains are two of the many types of injuries that may occur if you don’t take the time to properly stretch and warm up before exercising.

While these injuries aren’t life-threatening by any means, they can still cause a fair amount of pain and discomfort. The good news is that you can greatly reduce your risk of strains, pulled muscles and several other types of injuries by stretching before your workouts.

Improve Blood Flow

A lesser-know benefit of stretching and warming up before a workout is the fact that it improves your blood flow. When you stretch and do some other basic warmups, your heart will begin to beat faster, which is turn improves the blood flow throughout your body. Having more blood pumping through your body will provide your organs, muscle and tissue with a greater amount of oxygen.

There’s really no wrong way to go about stretching and warming up. You can reach your hands up in the air and then place them down by your feet for a few minutes. This is a simple and effective way to pull your muscles just a little but out of their ordinary position. In addition, you should also do a quick jog in place or some other form of cardiovascular exercise to warm up the heart and lungs.

If you are having trouble with your pre-workout stretches and warmups, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most gym trainers will be more than happy to offer assistance and guidance on techniques such as stretching. They’ll show you exactly how to stretch your body in a safe and effective manner that doesn’t result in any pain or discomfort. Sometimes all it takes is watching another person stretch correctly to understand the proper technique for yourself.

The bottom line is that everyone needs to take the time to stretch and warm up before a workout. It’s necessary for improving muscle flexibility, reducing the chance if injury, and it also improves blood flow throughout the body.
