In the world of mixed martial arts, endurance and stamina critical elements necessary for success. If you find yourself getting winded just minutes into a match, you simply won’t be able to perform at 100%; thus, giving your opponent a window of opportunity to strike. Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common problem that plagues newcomers to mixed martial arts. Keep reading and we’ll reveal some simple ways to improve your endurance and stamina so you’ll have a better shot at coming out victorious in mixed martial arts competitions.

Cardiovascular Exercise

The first step towards improving your endurance and stamina is to increase your amount of cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise refers to any workout that forces the heart to beat faster and the lungs to breathe more rapidly. You may not realize it, but mixed martial arts is a form of cardiovascular exercise. Just 5 minutes into a good match and you’ll likely be panting to try and catch your breath. However, you should also look elsewhere for cardiovascular exercise to help improve your overall stamina and endurance.

Running is hands down one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise. Going for a for a good half an hour run each day will yield significant improvements to your endurance and stamina. Of course, some people may have difficulty running for a full half an hour, which is perfectly fine. Instead, you can do something called “interval” running where you run for a certain amount of time followed by walking. The key with interval running is to constantly work on increasing your run time and decreasing your walk time until you are running the entire way.

Stay Hydrated

It’s no secret that most people go through the day in a state of dehydration. It may not create any visible effects, but dehydration will eventually take a toll on your body from the inside out. In addition, it will also lower your stamina and endurance, which is why it’s important to drink lots of H20 when you are about to compete in a mixed martial arts competition.

Most medical and health experts recommend the average adult drink at least eight-eight ounce glasses of water a day, but this isn’t entirely correct. If you are performing mixed martial arts or other cardio-intense workouts, you’ll likely require more. Don’t be afraid to chug down bottles of water on match and training days. The more water you drink, the better.

Eat Right

If you have a mixed martial arts competition coming up, try to avoid eating heavy meals. The more food you place in your stomach, the more work you are going to place on your digestive system. Too much food will have a negative effect by making you slow and sluggish. For optimal endurance and stamina levels, you should eat small snacks and save the big meals for after your match. Doing so will allow you to maintain your energy throughout the match without getting winded as easily.
